JP 3-D: July 2013
It was only a few months ago Steven Spielberg was teasing that JP might be a good candidate for 3-D retrofitting, the process whereby a cinematographer and a giant team of effects artists go frame-by-frame, "3-D-ifying" a film, and, well, lookie here: this Variety Twitter account goes and confirms it today, locking in July 19, 2013 as the date the JP dinosaurs will return to theaters once again. T-minus 428 days! (Thanks Dennis and Brent)

Kennedy Suggests JP4 Script Still to be Written, Asks "Why?"
In a chat with Collider.com a few weeks ago, long time JP producer Kathleen Kennedy fieled a few JP4 questions, reiterating that the development team is basically waiting for a "great script" before proceeding. Curiously, she also raises some doubt that the project may eventaully get off the ground, saying "[JP] was never intended to be a franchise, so there’s an argument to be made ‘Why are you doing a fourth Jurassic Park?’," She adds: "We’ve gotta find a good reason for why we’re doing a fourth Jurassic Park and we’re in the midst of working on that right now." (Thanks Marcos)

Spielberg Says JP Might be a Good Candidate for 3D Retrofitting
This Moviefone.com chat with Spielberg brings up an interesting subject: the idea that JP might one day be "retrofitted" and re-released in 3D theaters. "The only movie that I would ever even consider retrofitting is the first 'Jurassic Park'," he says. "I think would look pretty spectacular in 3D." JP would seem to be an obvious choice for 3D conversion, especially after conversions of Star Wars and Titanic have both been announced to be hitting 3D theaters in 2012. Of course the retrofitting process will never be as good as a movie shot originally in 3D but perhaps that is too much to ask.... (Thanks Dennis)

Spielberg Says JP4 Still Coming, Plot a 'Boring Secret'
Now that Steven Spielberg has finished up his new "War Horse" and done with "Tin Tin" (although he is currently busy filming a Abraham Lincoln biopic), he expects to turn his attention to the next JP movie. At least, that is what he told Comingsoon.net. "I haven't been active in the last year [on JP4]", he says. "But right now, it's on the schedule to bring out another 'Jurassic Park.'" Pressed further on whether the new film will be a sequel or reboot, Spieley says "It's just another boring secret." (Thanks Ian, William, & Eric)

Gingrich Suggests Building a Real JP
We here at DJP3P have historically not stepped into the political waters, though according to this article, we may have finally found a candidate we can whole heartily endorse. In Republican nominee candidate Newt Gingrich's 1995 book "To Renew America", he endorses fulfilling Michael Crichton's nightmare. "Why not aspire to build a real Jurassic Park?" he writes. "Wouldn't that be one of the most spectacular accomplishments of human history?" Now that's a platform we can all agree on: It'll only require overlooking his apparent racism, ethical lapses, and nutty tax plan.

JP: The Game Receives Scathing Reviews, Telltale Employees Accused of Vote Rigging
The curse lives on. JP: The Game, released for PC and Xbox 360 earlier this week and as a downloadable title via PSN, has received a few reviews, all of which are sadly negative. This 1up review concedes that the game has a good premise, but pretty much everything else with the title goes terribly wrong, with the game offering "the interactivity of a DVD menu screen" and that its "one of the most passive gaming experiences to exist since Night Trap." Meanwhile, Telltale is apparently not helping matters, with this Gamespot article suggesting employees of the game company are submitting bogus user reviews to Metacritic in an attempt to boost its score.

(An IPad2 version will also be available soon after launch as well.) They're also taking pre-orders once again at this site, where you can get a physical copy of the game for PC/Mac, as well as a bunch of unique collectables, for $39.

"The Cult of Jurassic Park"
This fun piece at Grantland.com looks at our little extended community of JP sites and fans as a tie-in to the recent release of the JP Blu-Rays. "Enough about Star Wars fanboys," it begins. "I'm here to talk about a rarer specimen: the Jurassic Park fanboy," and goes on to dive into the (admittedly) odd subculture we inhabit. The star of the article is certainly Terry from JPLegacy.org, who might take his JP probably a little more seriously than the rest of us, but is still very amusing nonetheless. The author appears to be a big fan himself, and delves into exactly what makes the films so appealing after all these years. (Thanks Matthew!)

JP Poster "Variants" from Mondo Tees
A bit late to the game on these, but Austin-based t-shirt factory Mondo Tees has been on a roll recently selling "variants" of classic movie posters, and have commissioned a series of very limited runs based on JP from several prominent artists. They announce their sales on Twitter and often sell out within seconds. You can see the two that have already been produced here. A third in the series is promised in the near future.

JP Trilogy Blu-Ray Extras Detailed
This page at Blu-Ray.com has some new details on what we can expect in the upcoming Jurassic Park Ultimate Trilogy (as well as the Ultimate Trilogy Gift Set), due for release October 25th. Besides all the extras from the DVD release, it will also include a new 2 hour, "six-part retrospective documentary" called "Return to Jurassic Park" that features interviews with the cast and crew of the films. In related news, a couple of the principals have been doing the press junket rounds to promote this release -- you can read short chats with Dennis Murren, Phil Tippet, John Rosengrant, and Ariana Richards here at Hi-Def Digest, here at Bloody-digusting.com, and video interviews here and here at IGN.com. There's also an awkward "unboxing" video of the "Trilogy Gift Set" from IGN you might to watch if you are considering the $120 (MSRP) version of the set..

Spielberg Confirms JP4
Though he certainly did not give much in the way of details, JP director Steven Spielberg shocked the crowd at the San Diego Comic-Con Thursday when he pretty much confirmed last months news that JP4's rusty gears were indeed turning again. "We have a story," he told the audience during a panel mainly about his upcoming film "Tin Tin". "We have a writer who is writing the treatment and hopefully we are going to make Jurassic Park 4 in all of our foreseeable futures, hopefully in the next two or three years." There are about two too many "hopefully's" in that quote for my liking, but still, exciting news nevertheless. (Thanks, uh, everyone..)

Spielberg Reportedly Working With 'Thor' Writer on Ideas For New JP
According to this HollwyoodReporter.com blog, Spielberg has been "brainstorming" with screenwriter Mark Protosevich on the next JP film, though both a Spielberg spokesperson and Universal stress it is very early and no script has been written. The blog post also points out Spielberg has had connections with Protosevich before, including working on a remake of Korean thriller "Oldboy" that never came to fruition. Besides 'Thor' Protosevich also has credits on 2007's "I Am Legend" and 2006's "Poseidon". (Thanks Brad + 'raptor2000')

JP Trilogy on Bluray in October
Word comes via ZonaDVD.com (in Spanish) that all 3 JP movies will be headed to BluRay disc on October 24th, with a pretty crazy looking "collectors edition" box which includes a T-rex figure with a "metal case" (click the link for a picture). If you don't want to spring for the apparent Hasbro cast-off, it is said the films will also be available as a regular pack with just the trilogy. No word on pricing or features or if we'll see any new content, but stay tuned.. (See BluRayFreak.com for more info.) Thanks Ian!

Sam Neill on JP4: "I Think It's Done."
A jokey Sam Neill, at a press briefing last month, told a reporter that he believes the JP trilogy is finished. "I think we've told the story. I think it's done," telling an MTV.com reporter, pointing out that with no Michael Crichton and no Stan Winston, the future of the JP trilogy looks dim. "No Stan, no Jurassic Park, really," he said. (Thanks Marcos and Andrew)

Final Crichton Book Due Out in November
JP fans will no doubt be interested to learn that Michael Crichton's estate plans to publish "Micro", the late authors' final novel, in November, according to a post at MichaelCrichton.com. Said to have been 1/3rd done when he died in 2008, Crichton left behind an outline of the rest of the story, which used by "The Hot Zone" author Richard Preston to complete the book. Thanks Joonas!

JP: The Game Delayed Until Fall
Has the JP game curse struck yet again? Word comes from DJP3P regular Yvonne that Telltale Games notified her via email this afternoon that the game has been delayed until the fall, and all pre-orders will be refunded to "ensure PC players get the best possible game experience". Besides the refund CEO Dan Connors said in the email all those who pre-ordered will get a free Telltale game though it's uncertain if you'll be able to apply this credit to another pre-order of the JP series. It was only a few weeks ago that Telltale was sending out mass emails asking people to pay $29.99 to pre-order the 5-episode series (said to be a discount from $35), which was originally due out this month.

JP: The Game Trailer Released
Telltale Games' super-quick development cycles are just about ready to give us the latest Jurassic Park video game, this one an adventure title for the PC that takes the player back to where it all started -- Isla Nublar. You can view the trailer at GameTrailers.com. Not sure I'm in love with the voice acting, but I suppose we will need to withold judgment until the April release of the first episode in what is promised to be a 5 game downloadable series (they are also shooting to eventually get them to consoles and the Mac). By the way, if you missed it last month, GameInformer.com had a exclusive look at the series complete with some concept art and screenshots. (Thanks Chris, Merijn, and Jaab)

JP4 Filming?
Well this is kind of strange. Despite no announcement of a director, any actors, or anything of the sort, Theme Park Magazine's Twitter account has posted this pic, taken today, of a shooting schedule board at Universal Studios Hollywood, and uh, look at the last thing there, right under "Parenthood". Everyone seems to be just as confused as you and I, and I'd say it was a joke except TPAMagazine also posted pics of a big blue screen spotted on the backlot. What the heck? (Thanks Powerhouse)

JP Spoof Musical Debuts at NY Fringe Festival
'Jurassic Parq: The Broadway Musical', described as the story of Jurassic Park, "boldly re-imagined and retold from the perspective of the dinosaurs," opened last night at the Ellen Stewart Theater in New York, as part of FringeNYC, an annual celebration of alternative theater and musical productions. The show is (seriously), an "unflinching meditation on gender, sexual, and racial identity ... when one dinosaur in a clan of females spontaneously turns male." More info on the show can be found here. It runs through 8/27. (Update: Extended! Just received word that there will be 4 more performances, 9/9 through 9/18. Check the official blog for more information.)

Help Send a DJP3Per to Antarctica
Long-time DJP3P friend 'Carnotaurus1' is competing for a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Antarctica - and you can help him win! Stacy Trenary, as he is known in real life, parlayed his interest in dinosaurs (obviously assisted by JP) into an anthropology degree, and now works six days a week at a place called "The Dinosaur Store" in Cocoa Beach, Florida, selling authentic fossils and minerals. Episodic JP Games in the Works
Well this is certainly out of left field: Telltale Games, creators of short game titles released as "episodes", and who were previously responsible for a well-received series of "Sam & Max" and "Monkey Island" adventures, have licensed several Universal properties including Jurassic Park and Back to the Future. Said to be in very early stages of development, both the JP and BTTF games will be "intense" and "and add new backstories". "I wouldn't call these games sequels per se but a new interpretation of their worlds for a new medium," says Telltale CEO Dan Connors. According to GameInformer, the first episode of the JP game will launch this year on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, PC and Mac. These titles will join the long and sordid history of JP video games, including JP games on the NES, SEGA, Super NES, PS2, and PC like "Trespasser", "Warpath", "Dino Defender", and "Scan Control" among many many others. The most recent was 2003's "Operation Genesis", a SimCity-ish take on the JP legacy. (Thanks Ian)

Crichtons' Art Collection Sells for $93 Million
Fans of JP author Michael Crichton know the man who gave us rampaging dinosaurs had many interests -- politics, science, technology, computers, heck, even transcendental meditation. But fewer know about his love of modern art, works from which were auctioned off Tuesday in New York, garnering $93.3 million according to Fast Company. In the collection was Jasper Johns iconic painting "Flag 1960-1966", which sold for $28.6 million, a record for a Johns piece. Die-hard Crichton fans know he was a fan of that artist, and wrote a coffee table book about the American painter in 1977. You can view other images from Crichton's collection (and see what they sold for) at Christies.com. There's also a neat video overview of the collection here. (Thanks Charlie)

"The Pacific", With JP's Joe Mazzello, Ends Sunday
If you haven't been watching HBO's intense 10 part mini-series about American Marines' experiences leading up to the end of World War 2, "The Pacific", you are missing one of the best works by an original JP cast member in years. An all-growed-up Joe Mazzello (whom I will forever call 'Timmy') plays Eugene Sledge, a young soldier who enters the war a God-fearing innocent but finds himself increasingly disturbed by what he experiences. In real life, Sledge would go on to write the book on which the miniseries itself is based. Sunday at 10 ET on HBO. (Thanks Nick).

IDW Plans New Jurassic Park Comic Book Series
While the next JP film still may be a big question mark, fans will have at least some new dino content to look forward to, with "Jurassic Park Redemption", a new comic book series, due for release this June. Speaking to IGN Comics, IDW editor Bob Schreck reveals the first arc of the comic book series will take place 13 years after the first JP. "Hammond's grandkids are all grown up and are still dealing with the aftermath of the Islands and their sorted histories," he says. Universal gave the team "little restrictions" to work with in terms of plot, Schreck says, adding there are plans for a second arc of stories. Comic newcomer Nate Van Dyke will do the art for the series, with covers by a wide range of comic veterans, like Frank Miller and Arthur Adams. (Thanks Deeg and Ashton)

Johnston: "Different" Idea For JP4
In an interview with Drew McWeeny (aka AICN's Moriarty) at Hitfix.com, JP3 director Joe Johnston says they have moved on to a different idea than the one proposed in the infamous script we heard about back in 2004. That script, if you'll remember, was penned by John Sayles and William Monahan (the latter would go on to win an Oscar for his work on "The Departed"), and featured genetically modified hyper-smart dinosaurs that the main character is tasked with training. But in this new script, "[it's] not about the dinosaur park anymore," Johnston tells McWeeny. "It's about all-new characters.. It's something different that we haven't seen before in the 'Jurassic Park' world." But is that original idea dead? Johnston says maybe not! "Universal and Steven will want to keep making these movies as long as they're successful, and who knows? We may see the Monahan/Sayles version come back," he says. (Thanks Randy and Zach)

Johnston Says JP4 "Beginning of a Second [JP] Trilogy"
Forget JP4, could both a JP5 and JP6 be in the future? Our ol' bud Joe Johnston, director of JP3, seems to think so in an interview with Boxoffice.com. "There is going to be a Jurassic Park IV," he tells the site, in an interview about his upcoming films, "The Wolfman" and "Captain America". "[JP4] breaks away from the first three—it's essentially the beginning of the second Jurassic Park trilogy. It's going to be done in a completely different way." Could it really be, more than a year after our last bit of disappointing-sounding JP4 news, the gears are slowly turning again? Sure sounds like it, but Johnston's involvement in projects through 2011 seem to suggest we might be waiting awhile (then again, we've been waiting since 2001). Though in this new "Avatar" age of films, it would seem ridiculous studios don't revisit franchises that might bring in the big bucks (A 3-D T-Rex anyone?)... Only time will tell I suppose! (Thanks 'raptor2000')

JP Producers Say JP4 Plans Fallen Through
In what probably won't be a surprise to most of us, JP's long-time producers, Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall said yesterday that no new work has been done on JP4, and that Kennedy thinks that "maybe" the franchise is finished. "You know, when Crichton passed away, I sorta felt maybe that's it," Kennedy told reporters at a press junket for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. "Maybe that's a sign that we don't mess with it." Is this the end, JP fans? I'd say probably, but then again we've heard talk like this before. To paraphrase the great Troy McClure, "Who knows what adventures we'll have between now and the time the franchise becomes unprofitable?" (Thanks ComingSoon.net, Clinton, Ryan, Eric, and Mark)

JP's Creator, Michael Crichton, Dead at 66
Michael Crichton, novelist, screenwriter, and best known to us here at DJP3P as the visionary inventor of the fictional "Jurassic Park" in his two novels, died yesterday, according to a report at ETOnline.com, after waging what is described as a "private battle" with cancer. He was 66. Crichton started his writing career as a way to pay his way through medical school, crafting tight, reality-based cautionary thrillers that would become his style throughout his career. He was never afraid to tackle popular controversies, and in fact reveled in turning them on their head, plowing into tricky subjects such as sexual harassment ("Disclosure"), global warming ("State of Fear"), or, my (obvious) personal favorite, what he saw as the dangerous game of genetic manipulation ("Jurassic Park"). Popular not only for his novels but television and movie work as well, he is to this day the only person to have the #1 movie (JP), the #1 TV show (ER), and the #1 book (Disclosure), all at the same time. (Thanks Phil)

Several JP Dino Props up for Auction
JP fans with deep, deep pocketbooks will be most interested to learn about this group of 16 Ebay items, all featuring maquettes, props, and actual real life animatronics from the JP films. Ranging in price from the understandable ($400 for Grant's Raptor nasal cavity) to the obscene ($60k for a full size JP3 raptor), these would certainly be fine gifts for a JP fanatic or, hey, a webmaster of a long-running JP website! The auction takes place tomorrow, August 1st. (Thanks Nate and Charlie)

Stan Winston, Dead at 62
A sad day for all JP fans today, as word comes via AICN that the father of Jurassic Park's dinosaurs, proponent and champion of live-action special effects, and "dino consultant" on all 3 Jurassic films, Stan Winston, has died. He was 62. Winston was always a firebrand in the JP community, with some accusing him of bullying directors to get his robot dinos screentime over the fancier (yet far more expensive) computer generated imagery. In JP3, he worked with director Joe Johnston to pioneer camerawork that seamlessly blended CG with his robotic creations in the same scene, often within the same shot. Winston loved to talk, especially to the press, and could always be counted on for an amusing quote or ancedote, often supplying us with juicy plot tidbits he probably shouldn't have revealed so early. Stan loved his work, and it was obvious he loved JP as much as we all do. He certainly will be missed. (Thanks Ian)
